Critical Thinking: How to Evaluate Information Before Acting on It
Critical Thinking: Evaluating Information Before Acting on It

Critical thinking is the discipline of assessing information on its merits rather than accepting it because it sounds persuasive, originates from a familiar source, or appears professionally presented.
It requires actively questioning, evaluating, and applying what is read, heard, or seen, including what one already presumes to know. Information may be incomplete, outdated, biased, or inaccurate.
Errors and misinformation can arise unintentionally, but individuals and organisations may also deliberately circulate false claims, selective facts, or persuasive messaging to influence decisions.
Consider a WhatsApp message claiming that a particular food cures a disease. Before forwarding it, a critical thinker would ask: Who produced this information? What evidence supports it? Is the source qualified and current? Has anything material been omitted?
Critical thinking moves individuals from passive receipt of information to informed judgment.
Applying the Discipline in Practice
The core practice is to pause, question, verify, and compare before concluding or acting. Decision-makers should test each item of information against the following criteria:
- Relevance: Does it answer the question actually being asked?
- Credibility: Is the source reputable and qualified?
- Currency: Is the evidence up to date?
- Objectivity: Are facts clearly distinguished from opinion?
- Intent: Is the message designed to inform, persuade, advertise, or manipulate?
- Completeness: Does it present the full picture, or only one side?
These questions carry particular weight online, where nearly anyone can produce content that appears authoritative.
For matters of consequence, avoid reliance on a single source. Compare several credible, independent sources, and note where the evidence converges and where it diverges.
The Objective
The purpose of critical thinking is not blanket scepticism. It is to establish sound reasons for what one chooses to believe, share, or act upon.
🔥 Stop Wasting Energy: The Smart Way to Job Hunt and Win Big
🔥 STOP WASTING ENERGY: THE SMART WAY TO JOB HUNT AND WIN BIG
Job hunting can feel like an emotional marathon. You wake up, refresh your email for interview invites, and… nothing. You send 100+ CVs to every company you can find, hoping at least one will respond. You stalk HRs on LinkedIn, leave messages in their inboxes, and all you get are blue ticks.
You pray. You fast. You tithe. You do everything you can to stay hopeful. But still—silence.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the bitter truth:
Job hunting is not a game of luck. It’s a game of systems and strategy. If you keep sending random CVs to random companies, you’ll keep getting random results—or no results at all.
Why Your Job Hunt Is Draining Your Soul
The traditional job-hunting approach is broken. Most job seekers do one of these:
“Spray and pray” applications: Sending the same CV to 200+ companies hoping someone bites.
Waiting for job ads: Thinking you’ll only apply when you see a vacancy.
Chasing HR on social media: DMing recruiters with “Any job for me?”
This isn’t strategy. It’s desperation. Employers can smell it from a mile away.
The Reality No One Tells You
Over 80% of jobs are never posted online. They’re filled through referrals, recommendations, or internal hiring.
Most recruiters spend less than 7 seconds scanning your CV. If it’s generic, you’re already out.
“Anything” is not a job title. When you say “I’m open to anything,” you’re basically saying, “I have no clue what I want.”
Here’s the mindset shift you need:
💡Stop being just another job seeker. Start being a solution to a company’s problem.
Step 1: Get Crystal Clear on What You Want
Before you hit “Apply” again, stop and think:
What roles truly excite me?
What industries value my skills?
What’s my unique strength?
If your answer is, “I just need anything that pays,” that’s not clarity—that’s survival mode. And survival mode is exactly why you keep getting ghosted.
Pro Tip: Write down 3 job titles you want to target. For example, instead of saying, “I can do admin or customer service or sales or anything,” say:
Administrative Officer
Customer Success Specialist
Office Manager
This focus helps you position your CV and conversations with precision.
Step 2: Target With Laser Precision
Would you fire 200 bullets into the air hoping one hits a target? No. Yet that’s what most people do with their CVs.
Instead, create a Target List:
1. List 20 companies you admire or where people like you are thriving.
2. Study their career pages, LinkedIn profiles, and culture.
3. Find 2-3 employees who currently work there—especially in roles similar to what you want.
4. Connect with them and start conversations.
Why this works: Companies hire people they know, trust, or have heard about. Networking opens doors job boards can’t.
Step 3: Apply the 5/2/1 Rule
Forget the madness of applying to 100 jobs daily. Here’s a smarter system:
5: Apply to 5 relevant, high-quality jobs (not just “anything”).
2: Connect with 2 meaningful contacts in your field.
1: Follow up with 1 person—a recruiter, HR, or industry connection.
Do this daily or weekly. The key? Consistency beats chaos.
Step 4: Your CV Isn’t Just Paper—It’s a Marketing Weapon
Let’s be honest: Most CVs are boring. They read like a grocery list of duties, not achievements.
Your CV should:
✅Highlight your impact (“Increased sales by 20%,” not “Responsible for sales”).
✅Be tailored for the specific role.
✅Include keywords that match the job description (many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems).
✅If your CV doesn’t get responses, rewrite it. Don’t just keep sending it out hoping for a miracle.
Step 5: Master the Hidden Job Market
The hidden job market is where real hiring happens. Here’s how you tap into it:
Use LinkedIn smartly: Post insights in your field, comment on company updates, and connect with recruiters.
Attend industry events: Even virtual ones. Opportunities often come from a single conversation.
Ask for referrals: If you know someone at a company, a referral can move your CV to the top of the pile.
Remember, connections get you in the door faster than any job board ever will.
Step 6: Follow Up Like a Pro
Most job seekers send one application and then wait forever. Winners follow up.
A simple follow-up message after 5–7 days can make you stand out. It shows interest, persistence, and professionalism.
Example:
💡“Hi [Recruiter’s Name], I recently applied for the [Job Title] role and wanted to express my continued interest. I’d love to contribute my [specific skill/achievement] to [Company]. Please let me know if any additional information is needed.”
Step 7: Mindset Is Your Secret Weapon
Job hunting can wreck your confidence if you let it. But remember:
Rejections don’t mean you’re not good enough.
Every “No” brings you closer to the right “Yes.”
You’re not just looking for any job—you’re looking for the right fit.
Your Action Plan (Starting Today)
1. Stop applying randomly. Make a list of 20 companies.
2. Revamp your CV with impact-driven achievements.
3. Start networking (LinkedIn, professional groups, alumni).
4. Apply the 5/2/1 Rule consistently for the next 30 days.
5. Track your progress—which companies respond, which don’t.
Final Word: Stay Relevant or Stay Behind
There are plenty of jobs out there—but only for those who position themselves like a top candidate.
You have two choices:
Keep doing what you’ve always done (and keep getting silence).
Or step up, build a system, and job hunt with strategy.
Stay relevant. Stay sharp. Or stay behind. The choice is yours.
