Do You Really Need a Brown Envelope to Get a Job?

“Unless you bribe, you won’t get a job in this country.”

I hear this all the time, and honestly, it breaks my heart.

Not because it’s 100% wrong, but because it discourages thousands of job seekers who already feel defeated. It sends the message that hard work, skills, and personal effort don’t matter—and that’s far from the truth.

The Brutal Reality of Job Hunting

Let’s be real—the job market today is insanely competitive. Yes, there are corrupt systems. Yes, some people buy their way in. But here’s the part no one talks about:

Not every job is bought. Not every employer is waiting for a bribe.

There are companies still hiring based on skills, experience, and the value you bring to the table. I’ve seen people with zero connections land their dream jobs because they focused on strategy and consistency rather than shortcuts.

What About Those Who Can’t Afford to Bribe?

What message are we giving to:

The village boy with no fancy degree but endless dreams?

The single mother trying to build a better life for her kids?

The fresh graduate with solid skills but no powerful uncle in HR?

If we keep saying, “You need a bribe to get a job,” aren’t we killing the hope of those who simply can’t afford it?

Why Strategy Beats Bribes

The truth is, jobs are few, and like anything rare, you need a strong strategy to get one. Here’s what you should focus on:

1. Build a strong CV – Make it stand out, tailored to each job.

2. Network smartly – Don’t beg for opportunities, create value and connections.

3. Work on your personal brand – Be visible online; LinkedIn is a game-changer.

4. Upgrade your skills – Stay relevant and competitive.

Hope Is Not Dead—Don’t Give Up

When I share job-hunting tips, I do it for those who still believe in their hustle—for the ones with no rich uncles or fat envelopes.

If my tips don’t work for you, that’s okay—share better ones! But please, don’t tell the next person that hope is dead. Your words can either build or destroy someone’s last bit of courage.

Final Word: Stay Sharp, Stay Relevant, Stay Moving

The job market is tough, yes. But you have two choices:

Give up and blame corruption.

Stay persistent, build your value, and keep knocking until a door opens.

Your hustle isn’t in vain. The right job is out there waiting for someone who refuses to quit.
